Not many Indian B-Schools have a process in place for providing students with internships in a corporate environment for their MBA programs. Many students who are freshly admitted from graduate colleges have little or no experience and companies look for candidates with corporate experience after graduation. The reason is simple, hands on practical knowledge is much more important than mere theoretical knowhow, especially in a country like India.
Some companies can even go as far as to have a policy to hire MBA students through internships only. An internship can be the perfect too to bridge the gap between the industry and educational institutions. While this is not a big issue for executive MBA courses, colleges that offer the traditional one year mba, now provide internship opportunities for students to get a more well-rounded MBA experience. An MBA internship can either be a learning-oriented term bound work experience with a company, typically between the first and second year of the MBA program. Many colleges are also offering a consulting project which is similar experience and is more popular for a 1 year full time MBA in India.
